benefits of afterschool involvement

Children spend 80% of their waking hours outside of school. How can we make those hours count? After-school and summer programs play a vital role in providing enriching experiences that go beyond the classroom. These programs support the holistic development of children by fostering social skills, teamwork, and self-confidence. Through a wide range of activities such as sports, arts, and college and career readiness, they help children grow both academically and personally, preparing them for success in all areas of life.

youth violence prevention

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlight six key strategies to prevent youth violence. One strategy identifies the need to connect youth to caring adults and activities, including mentoring and after-school programs. The CDC explains that after-school programs provide valuable opportunities for youth to develop social and academic skills, while also becoming involved in school and community activities. These programs help build positive relationships and expand prosocial experiences.

Additionally, after-school programs play a crucial role in keeping children safe during critical times of the day, such as from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., when youth crime and violence are most likely to occur. By offering supervision and structured activities, these programs reduce risk factors and provide positive support for youth, helping them stay engaged and out of harm’s way.
